Let's Talk about Teaching English
Have you ever wondered whether the way you teach is right? Have you ever been in a situation where you felt that you may fail as a teacher? Have you ever entered the classroom and said: "What the hell am I doing here!?" ?
Well, we may go through the same experience especially when we are novice teachers. You may start your teaching career with energy at the beginning, but you may soon feel helpless and tired. This goes back to many reasons like:
- Working hours.
- Students' demotivation.
- Extra administrative reports.
- Lack of resources and teaching ideas.
- Restrictions imposed by schools systems.
And many other reasons that are most of the time linked to lack of experience with such situations.
I created this blog in order to share tips based on my experience in teaching English that can, for sure, be applicable in teaching other languages. I started teaching English ( ESP) in 2016, in the Department of Humanities. Soon after, I was recruited to teach General Course of English. After some months, I joined Access Microscholarship Program as a teacher at Avenir Plus School-Mostaganem. In the very beginning of my career as a teacher, I struggled a lot with finding a suitable syllabus for my learners, it turned to be a tough mission. Sometimes, I thought of quitting teaching because I thought I was not qualified for this job, but soon later, I discover that my way of analyzing situations was totally following a wrong path. When I joined Access Program that was Sponsored by World Learning Organization and US Department of State, my attitude towards teaching completely changed.
My university teacher Mr. Belkheir Fethi always told us that there is no ready recipe for teaching. Teaching depends on what type of learners you have, age, culture, personality, and others. In addition to this, one can't just open a website or a book and start selecting language activities randomly just because they have been used or tested by other teachers. Thus; every time I find online activities, I try my best to adapt them to the learning context and culture in my classroom. With the help of my best friend Faiza Benaicha, we could succeed in collecting a good number of activities, but we did not apply them word by word, we rather got inspired and most of the time, we used only their general ideas and improvised to create what suits our learners.
My experience seems short, but as my teacher used to say that Experience can't come with the number of years, there are teachers who spent repeating the same way of teaching of one year ten time, this does not make them have 10 years experience. Even though it was a short time, but it made me reconsider the way I teach. I discovered that teaching in a real classroom differs from making research or learning about teaching at the university. The field changed my view of things and I would like to share these tips and stories with you to pave the way to exchange ideas and opinions.
For more teaching ideas, keep updated to my blog.
